Denver Magazine article on FD3

Fashion Darling

When Fallene Wells first created Forever Darling three years ago, it was a way for young designers like herself to gain some exposure. It soon grew into a major fundraiser for Autism Speaks, which supports parents and children with the affliction while searching for a cure. Here are the 2009 designers.

DANA BUTLER

DON CUDNEY

This is the third year Fallene Wells has put together the Forever Darling fashion show to benefit Autism Speaks, an organization that is close to her heart as her sister’s twins were diagnosed as autistic two years ago. She conceived of the event as a way to get some exposure for the young designers she knew in town. Her sincere hope is that those who come to the event leave feeling inspired to create their own work, whether it be through fashion or another form of art. “I choose designers based on skill level, style, professionalism, and if they are established or not,” Wells says. “I also look for a diverse group of designers, so there is something for everyone. I am always looking for designers that haven’t been in a show and have difficulty getting their line out there. I feel this is a perfect way to showcase their talent and get the exposure they need.”

And the Winner is…

A fun twist to the event this year was the addition of an avant-garde challenge. The designers were paired up in teams of two and given a hundred dollars to create a cocktail outfit. But it couldn’t be that simple. Each team took inspiration from a different flower arrangement created specifically for them by Margaux Brauker from A Design Resource, who was, in turn, inspired by famous works of art. The winning team of James Silvrants and Stephanie Ohnmacht based their creation on the flowers that were inspired by the artwork of Piet Mondrian.

What does the concept of “avant-garde” mean to you?

James: “A design that is more than day and evening but not costume.”

Stephanie: “Striving to be out front but not so far as to not be meaningful.”

How did the artwork and the flower arrangement inspire your outfit?

James: “They both brought our design to life.”

Stephanie: “The lines of the art and the soft feeling of the flowers inspired us to infuse the final product with structure and a flowing, airy quality.”

What were the biggest challenges in creating your piece?

James: “So many ideas and trying to choose only one design.”

Stephanie: “To push the envelope and yet deliver a fundamentally wearable and attractive garment.”

What made yours the winner?

James: “We worked well together and both wanted a design that could be worn and would be fun.”

Stephanie: “Our piece provided a few unexpected touches.”
